My main goal was to get shots of the skyline of downtown San Diego, but it turned into something completely different. There was a Crew team practicing, families out on boats, and a couple having fun on a waverunner. I also got some footage of Sea World. It was pretty wild how stopping for one thing led to getting footage to start an entirely different idea and video.

San Diego County Fair

This one was actually a lot of fun for me. I was very careful to avoid direct overflights of the crowds (FAA Part 107 rules), so most clips are angled or lateral. However, the movement, lights, and fog were fun to work with. The rides provided an opportunity for me to move the drone around them and try to capture as much as possible, so I flew slow knowing that I would play with the playback speed in editing. I got some excellent shots in a short amount of time before the impending Marine...

What filming in D-Log does for me

What we see here are two screenshots of construction progress footage: one in D-Log and one post-production. Filming in RAW captures minimally processed sensor data and provides some flexibility in post-production. And that might be perfect for some clients. However, D-Log records a flat image that preserves more highlight and shadow detail than a standard profile while keeping file sizes and workflow manageable. This gives me more control during color grading, especially in challenging...

Why repeatable flight paths matter

Firms working in the fields of construction or landscape often need updates on the progress of their work or to monitor previous projects over the short and long term. While time consuming, there's arguably no better on-site time saver than building and saving routes within the drone user controller. Here we see a housing development broken down into sectors for the purpose of surveying their existing landscape architecture and its health. I prepped my end of the project by building routes,...

How I plan a drone flight near controlled airspace

My professional piloting experience led me to obtain my Part 107 certification and become a drone operator, therefore, it's natural that I rely on the same skills I've employed for the better part of two decades. What we see here is the airspace system of San Diego International Airport and the surrounding, smaller airports. We know that you can't fly a drone higher than 400 feet Above Ground Level without prior authorization due to larger aircraft and safety concerns. Below that picture we...
